Beitbridge district held its National Tree Planting day at Nuli primary school where the attractively green environment set the tone for the significant day.
Several stakeholders, organisations and leaders of the community attended the event including, the Forestry Commission, headman Joseph Muleya Tshinoni, Beitbridge east MP Albert Nguluvhe, Rural district council leadership led by Peter Ncube various government. These members were impressed by the vegetation at Nuli primary school which which showed everyone that tree planting was at the heart of the school’s key initiative.
Speaking to Ziyah News Network, Headman Tshinoni highlighted the importance of this day to the community and the young people of not only Nuli community but Beitbridge district as a whole. He also emphasised that people need to uphold this day and practice planting trees everyday of their life.
“As people gather here, they learn several key aspects and understand the importance of trees,our young children will grow up knowing the importance of having these trees because we don’t want to have a desert area whereby trees become extinct by deforestation,infact we expect our people to understand that a tree is life “ headman Tshinoni said.
The guest of honor, Honourable MP Nguluvhe, highlighted the key aspects of this day including climate change effects, along with the theme of year, which says trees and forest for ecosystem restoration and improved livelihood ’.the theme itself describes various aspects on trees and the life of people .
“Planting trees and caring for our forest is a crucial step towards achieving sustainable development goal 15:life on land and SDG 2 :zero hunger, trees play a vital role in mitigating climate change…Beitbridge situated in a semi-arid region ,is susceptible to droughts and erratic rainfall patterns .by planting fruit trees ,we can enhance food security and diversity livelihood.
