AUTHORITIES in Botswana have killed thousands of dollars worth of Zimbabwean cattle as they try avoiding a foot and mouth disease outbreak reported in Zimbabwe.

Affected areas are the Shashi villages of Beibridge and other areas south of Gwanda and Plumtree districtsbof Matabeleland South.

Video footages shared by Parks and Wildlife officials at Beitbridge showed dozens of shot dead and being dumped in a pit for possible incineration.

A voice note accompanying the footages showed the incident may have occured Sunday in a predominantly Ndebele speaking area where a villager was mobilising others to buy a fence and stop their cattle from going to that country.

Botswana last week imposed a cattle and related animal products from their country.

The ban covers live animals and high-risk products, with veterinary officials increasing surveillance along border areas and at entry points to prevent any possible cross-border transmission.
