A Bulawayo resident this week reignited public concern over poor road conditions after posting photos of a badly damaged section of Waverly Street, also known as Renkini Road, between Renkini and Ross Camp.

The citizen, using X (formerly Twitter), questioned who had built the road, saying it was already falling apart even though it was less than a year old.

The post tagged the City of Bulawayo and Mayor David Coltart.

Coltart quickly replied, promising to look into the issue.

He later shared an update from the city’s Roads Engineer explaining the situation.

According to Coltart, the road in question is being rebuilt by the city workers, not a private contractor.

He said progress had been slower than expected because teams had to deal with other urgent problems, such as fixing burst water pipes and attending to the recent fire at the Richmond dumpsite.

He said the city was still installing new drainage systems, which must be completed before the final surfacing can be done.

The last stage of work has also been delayed because the machine needed to lay asphalt is currently being used on another project in Gweru.

“The road is not yet finished,” Coltart explained.

“Once the drainage work and final surfacing are complete, it will be fully reopened to traffic. We thank residents for their patience while we finish these important improvements,” he said

The city assured residents that work is ongoing and that the incomplete section near N. Richard will be completed once all drainage and surfacing work is done.
