The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced an increase in the winner’s prize money of the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Champions(CHAN) tournament to be held in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda has been increased by 75 percent.
According to CAF, the CHAN champions will receive USD3.5 million whilst the total prize money of the tournament has been increased to USD 10.4 which is a 32 percent increase from the previous tournament. The 2023 CHAN winner’s received USD 2million and the total prize money was USD 7million.
The CAF President Patrice Motsepe highlighted the importance of the prize money increase as Africa’s football motherboard seeks to develop African based players and make the tournament appealing and attractive to the football fans, TV viewers and sponsors.
“We are excited about the TotalEnergies CHAN ,Kenya ,Tanzania and Uganda 2024 and have significantly increased the Prize Money of the Winner to USD 3.5million which is 75percent .We have also increased the total prize money of CHAN 2024 to USD 10.4million which is 32 percent increase. The CHAN is an important competition for the development and growth of African based footballers and talented young players and will contribute significantly to the global competitiveness…,”CAF President Motsepe stated.
The CHAN 2024 tournament will kick start on February 1 and the final is set to take place on Friday 28 February 2025.
In line with ,with strategies to increase the commercial value of African competitions ,CAF started increasing the CHAN prizes in 2023 when the winners of the trophy received USD 2 million compared to the USD 1,250,000 received by the previous champions in 2021.Fast Forward 2025, CAF has again increased total prize to USD 10.4 million with champions receiving USD 3.5 million. This move shows a steady growth of the CHAN tournament since the coming in of Dr Patrice Motsepe to the helm of African Football.
