A cross-border truck driver, Peter Moyo, appeared in the Beitbridge Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 20 January, facing charges of unlawful possession of dangerous drugs after police allegedly found two boxes of Broncleer in his truck late last year.

Moyo was arrested on 23 December at Mana Trade, Beitbridge, while driving a truck from Johannesburg, South Africa, to Harare.

Procecutor Tawanda Chigavazira said, the accused arrived at Mana Trade at around 10am when police officers approached him and requested to search the truck he was driving.

During the search, police allegedly discovered two boxes of Broncleer containing 50 bottles of 100mls each, a cough syrup commonly abused as a drug, leading to Moyo’s immediate arrest.

Moyo denied the allegations, insisting that the drugs did not belong to him. Chigavazira told him to defend him self.

In his defence, Moyo said it was his first time driving a cross-border truck from Johannesburg to Harare. He told the court that a certain man had given him the luggage found in the truck, assuring him that it was to be delivered to a woman in Harare.

Moyo further alleged that the man had provided him with the woman’s contact number, insisting that he was unaware the luggage contained drugs.

After hearing submissions from both sides, Magistrate Brenda Kachepa remanded Moyo in custody to 23 January 2026.

The matter is set to continue with cross-examination.
