The Zimbabwe Republic Police has confirmed a tragic road traffic accident that occurred early morning of 27 May along the Harare-Bulawayo Road near Kwekwe, resulting in the deaths of 12 people.

The tragic  collision took place at the 200-kilometre peg, close to the Sebakwe River, involving a fuel tanker with two trailers, a two-tonne truck, and a Nissan AD Van with 12 occupants.

According to police reports, the incident unfolded when the fuel tanker, heading from Harare towards Kwekwe, first collided with the oncoming two-tonne truck.

Moments later, the tanker then collided head-on with the Nissan AD Van traveling in the opposite direction. The tanker subsequently dragged the van for several metres before overturning and falling on top of it.

Rescue teams arrived at the scene to find the occupants of the AD Van trapped inside and emergency personnel worked tirelessly to extricate the victims. The bodies of the victims were taken to Kwekwe General Hospital for post mortem.
