Local soccer players are expressing their frustration and disappointment following recent announcements from the Municipality of Beitbridge regarding the temporary closure of Dulivhadzimu Stadium. Starting January 6, 2025, the stadium will undergo annual rehabilitation works, rendering it unavailable for all sporting and other activities until further notice.

A prominent player in the community who chose to be anonymous, voiced the feelings of many athletes who are used to spending their free time training at the stadium.

“This is not just a field for us; it’s our second home. We dedicate countless hours here developing our skills and bonding as a team. Players are concerned that the closure will disrupt their training routines and affect their preparedness for the upcoming 2025 Division One soccer season,” he lamented.

The Municipality’s announcement though frustrating for some might be what the Doctor ordered for the revered stadium that is clearly in urgent need of sprucing up.

Community members have urged the town council to address safety concerns at the stadium.

Several residents have reported that the facility has been turning into a hub for illicit activities, with young adults and children frequently seen loitering around, often under the influence of alcohol or engaging in drug-related activities.

“We need to ensure that the stadium remains a safe space for the youth,” said another player.

“If it’s just going to become a den for drugs and alcohol, then what’s the point of closing it for renovation? We urge the city council to implement tighter security measures to protect the future of our young athletes,” he added

The Municipality of Beitbridge issued a public notice, expressing regret for any inconveniences caused by the temporary closure.

The town clerk, Loud Ramakgapola , promised that the rehabilitation works would ultimately enhance the facility, making it ready for sports activities well before the new season commences.

As the community awaits the completion of the rehabilitation works, local soccer players are hopeful that meaningful changes will be implemented not only to improve the stadium but also to restore its reputation as a safe and welcoming environment for all.
