Iran launched at least 180 missiles into Israel on Tuesday, escalating hostilities in a long-standing conflict that threatens to ignite a wider regional war.

The missiles lit up the night sky, triggering air raid sirens and prompting residents to seek shelter. Reports indicate that the assault resulted in few injuries, with Israel claiming its air defense systems intercepted many of the missiles.

The attack follows a series of Israeli strikes targeting Hezbollah leaders in Lebanon, amidst ongoing tensions with the Iran-backed group, which has retaliated with rocket fire into Israeli territory.

As the situation escalated, Israeli forces conducted limited ground operations in southern Lebanon, claiming to be targeting Hezbollah infrastructure.

The conflict saw further violence earlier in the day, with a shooting attack in Tel Aviv leaving six dead.

The ongoing hostilities have drawn attention from the U.S., with National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan labeling the missile attack a “significant escalation.”

President Biden expressed strong support for Israel, stating his administration is actively discussing responses.

In response to the missile assault, Iranian military leaders warned of severe repercussions for any Israeli actions against their territory.

The UN Security Council has scheduled an emergency meeting to address the deteriorating situation in the Middle East, as fears of broader conflict continue to mount.
