Mandla Elliot Mthembu, the ex-husband of South African media personality Khanyi Mbau, has passed away in New York at the age of 68.
Mthembu, who had been residing in the United States for several years, died on Sunday evening at a New York hospital following complications from two strokes. The family confirmed that he lost his life while receiving treatment for the second stroke.
Family spokesperson Karabo Mohlala told Sunday World:
“Despite the tireless efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to complications related to the stroke.”
The family described Mthembu as a man of resilience and dedication, whose influence extended across South Africa’s business and political spheres.
“Throughout his life, Mr Mthembu was known for his entrepreneurial spirit, his contributions to South Africa’s business landscape, and his commitment to the values of the ANC. His legacy will be remembered by many across the country,” Mohlala added.
Mthembu was also widely recognized for his high-profile marriage to Khanyi Mbau, with whom he shared a child. Beyond personal headlines, he left a mark as a prominent businessman, whose ventures and civic involvement shaped his reputation both locally and internationally.
His death marks the end of a chapter in South Africa’s business and political circles, where his presence and contributions had long been felt. Family and friends are expected to celebrate his life and legacy in the coming days.
