The house of well-known musician Thomas Mapfumo caught fire yesterday, sparking speculation that the attack may be politically motivated given the veteran musician’s brushes with both individuals and the ruling party as a collective.
Mapfumo was very active in support of Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle, turned into a strong critic of the Zimbabwean government and the fire outbreak at his house has ignited theories about its cause
The razing of the three-bedroom house, located in Domboshava, has shocked Mapfumo who believes the fire cannot be natural.
“That house couldn’t have caught fire like that. There was no grass nearby, so blaming a veld fire isn’t true,” he reportedly said.
Unconfirmed reports say that Mapfumo’s nephews were threatened by unknown people just before the house burned down.
Mapfumo left Zimbabwe at the turn of the millennium to set base in the United States of America claiming his life was in danger. However, the Second Republic has maintained the Chimurenga music icon has no case to answer in Zimbabwe and is free to return to his country of birth anytime but he, Mapfumo has remained adamant he is not safe.
