President Emmerson D. Mnangagwa, in accordance with Section 27(1) of the Civil Protection Act, has declared a state of disaster following a devastating fire that destroyed the Mbare Traders Market on October 8, 2024. The fire completely destroyed the retail section and damaged parts of the wholesale market, affecting over 4,000 traders.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, but it has had a severe impact on the livelihoods of many traders who depend on the market for their income.
The destruction of goods has left these entrepreneurs stranded, struggling to find a way to continue their businesses.
In a press statement, the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works emphasized that the declaration of a state of disaster will help mobilize essential resources, both financial and material, to support the rebuilding of the market and assist affected traders in recovering their businesses.
The Ministry also confirmed that the government will work closely with the private sector and other stakeholders to restore the damage caused by the fire, assuring the nation that efforts are underway to address the needs of those affected and to rebuild the market as quickly as possible.
As the community grapples with the aftermath of this tragic incident, support and solidarity for the affected traders will be crucial in helping them recover and rebuild their lives.
