President Emmerson Mnangagwa praised the vital role played by Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in strengthening the local economy and countering the adverse effects of illegal sanctions.
He made the remarks during his address at the 2024 Zimbabwe Local Government Association Annual Indaba, held in Harare yesterday, where he spoke to over 2,000 councilors from all 92 local authorities.
Highlighting the resilience and resourcefulness of Zimbabwe’s entrepreneurs, President Mnangagwa noted that SMEs are not only essential for employment creation but are also pivotal in promoting broad-based empowerment within communities.
“It is encouraging to note that the hard-working entrepreneurs in the SME sector are helping in busting illegal sanctions,” he stated.
President Mnangagwa reaffirmed his government’s commitment to creating decent and safe work environments, emphasizing the need for critical infrastructure that fosters the participation of women and youth in economic activities.
He announced that the ZANU PF Government is spearheading the reconstruction and modernisation of the Mbare Traders Market, urging all responsible Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to expedite the completion of this vital project aimed at improving urban living and working spaces.
“The ZANU PF Government has so far taken charge of the reconstruction and modernisation of Mbare Traders Market,” he noted.
Calling upon local authorities to align their 2025 development plans with the needs of their communities, President Mnangagwa reiterated the importance of implementing people-centered projects.
“You should, therefore, operate in unison, always collaborating, sharing experiences and sharpening yourselves towards responsive policy-making at the grassroots level for the benefit of our beloved motherland, Zimbabwe,” he added
Further, he urged stakeholders to engage in regular consultations with communities, ensuring that no individual or locality is left behind in the pursuit of sustainable, efficient, and affordable services.
As the nation moves forward, President Mnangagwa’s remarks serve as a clarion call for unity and concerted effort towards revitalising local governance and fostering an inclusive environment for all Zimbabweans.
