A shameless Ronald Sibanda, (27) has appeared before Beitbridge Magistrate Brenda Kachepa where he was sentenced to perform community service after his conviction for assaulting his 90-year-old grandfather, Dzulapi Muleya.
Sibanda pleaded guilty to the charge.
Prosecutor Olivia Chomutinya told the court that Sibanda arrived at Muleya’s home in Mutetengwe village under Chief Tshitaudze in a drunken state around 6 pm and began making noise and shouting while holding a stick.
When Muleya instructed Valentine Maramwire to close the door, Sibanda proceeded to assault Muleya with a mupani stick, striking him on the head and wrist.
Chomutinya produced a medical report detailing the extent of Muleya’s injuries.
A report was made resulting to Sibanda’s arrest.
In his plea, Sibanda attributed his actions to being under the influence of alcohol.
“I was under the influence of alcohol and I don’t know why I did that, but I acknowledge that I knew what I was doing,” he pleaded.
He expressed remorse and offered to ask for forgiveness from his grandfather, stating that he was willing to do anything to appease him.
Prosecutor Chomutinya noted that the state would consider the vulnerability of the victim, an 90-year-old man, in its assessment of the case.
Magistrate Kapcheba sentenced Sibanda to community service to be performed at a public institution.
