The Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), led by Welshman Ncube, has criticized the Speaker of Parliament and the President of the Senate for perceived double standards in handling the case of Sengezo Tshabangu, the party’s interim secretary general.
This criticism follows their recent announcement that they will not act on any expected recall order against Tshabangu until his ongoing court challenge is resolved.
Tshabangu, a hated figure within the main opposition party over massive recalls he has unilaterally effected since October 2023, has filed an interdict to stop any recall from the senate following his recent expulsion from the party for indiscipline.
His sacking opened the way for CCC to recall the opposition senator.
But before any recall could be made, Tshabangu rushed to court to file an interdict claiming his sacking was instigated by an improperly constituted CCC disciplinary committee.
Willias Madzimure, spokesperson for the CCC, expressed his party’s frustration, stating that the Speaker and Senate President have shown hypocrisy by acting swiftly on several recalls initiated by Tshabangu while disregarding court challenges from affected MPs.
“At the case management meeting, the Speaker of Parliament’s lawyers revealed for the first time in recall history that they would not oppose the application but would instead abide by whatever ruling the court makes,” Madzimure noted.
“It is concerning that the Speaker has consistently opposed applications filed by the CCC against Tshabangu, despite the fact that he should have adhered to court decisions.”
Tshabangu’s future will be determined on March 17, when the court is scheduled to deliver its judgment regarding his challenge.
The case is set to be discussed further among the parties before the Judge President on March 13, 2025.
