SMALLHOLDER farmers in Beitbridge rural are set to benefit from an agricultural development initiative aimed at improving access to markets and strengthening value chains for their produce.
The programme, called SAHWIRA (Sustainable Agribusiness Hubs and Wholesome Initiatives for Rural Advancement) will be implemented by Welthungerhilfe (WHH).
The initiative was introduced to farmers on Friday during a field day held at Swereki.
Speaking at the event, Project Coordinator Ronald Tirivavi said the programme is designed to assist farmers in sourcing reliable markets through the establishment of agricultural hubs.
“The project focuses on strengthening crop value chains by connecting farmers to structured markets,” he said.
“Through these agribusiness hubs, smallholder farmers will be better positioned to sell their produce competitively and consistently,” he said
Tirivavi said SAHWIRA promotes agroecological farming principles while transforming agriculture into a viable commercial enterprise for rural households.
The initiative seeks to move farmers beyond subsistence production towards sustainable and market-oriented systems.
He said the programme aligns with National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2), which emphasizes inclusive economic growth and agricultural transformation.
NDS2 builds on the foundations of NDS1 by aiming to increase agricultural output, strengthen food security, and enhance agro-processing value chains.
“The broader goal is to empower farmers to become commercial agriculturalists and, ultimately, industrial players within the agricultural sector,” Tirivavi said.
Welthungerhilfe, one of Germany’s largest private aid agencies, has been operating in Zimbabwe since 1980.
The organization focuses on fighting hunger and promoting sustainable, resilient food systems, with a mission to achieve zero hunger and uphold the right to a dignified, self-determined life.
The SAHWIRA project is expected to play a key role in unlocking economic opportunities for rural farmers in Beitbridge by improving market access and strengthening agricultural productivity.
