Namibia’s elections are underway with the ruling party SWAPO seeking to extend its 34year reign under the guidance of what would be the country’s first female President.
As the citizens are in the process of electing a new leader, political analyst have been highlighting that key issues which might influence this election include high unemployment, inequality and corruption allegations against the ruling elite.
The people of Namibia especially the youth will be hoping to have a new leader who will address the challenges of unemployment. The citizens are hoping that the discovery of minerals such oil and hydrogen will hopefully benefit them if the leadership is competent.
SWAPO has been ruling Namibia since its independence from apartheid South Africa in 1990.the ruling party’s presidential candidate, vice President Netumbo Nandi -Ndaitwah is seeking to be the first female president if she wins.
The Namibian elections are coming in a busy year for the SADC region after the elections in South Africa, Mozambique, Mauritius and Botswana where a liberation movement was ousted. While the elections are expected to be tighter, the ruling SWAPO is expected to win.
