THE Tugwi-Mukosi Dam, the largest inland water reservoir in Zimbabwe has reached its maximum holding capacity of 100% and is currently spilling safely following a period of sustained, heavy rainfall across the dam’s catchment region.

On their official X page (formerly Twitter) , the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) confirmed the status of the dam and issued an urgent safety protocol.

“Tugwi–Mukosi Dam is now at 100% capacity. As of 3 Jan 2026, the dam is safely spilling following sustained inflows from ongoing rainfall.Downstream communities are advised to exercise caution and avoid flooded river crossings,”ZINWA’s post reads.

ZINWA is urging residents in downstream areas to exercise extreme caution like
avoiding flooded river crossings and removing water abstraction equipment such as irrigation pumps from river channels to prevent damage or loss.

ZINWA has also stated that further updates will be issued as monitoring of the dam’s status continues.
