The Wamlala Stream in Beitbridge has not flooded despite several consecutive days of rainfall, easing fears among residents living in flood-prone areas.
Most areas that are vulnerable to flooding are located along the Wamlala Stream, which cuts across the town and is gradually increasing in size, raising concerns whenever rains persist for extended periods.
Beitbridge Ward 4 Councillor, Emmanuel Takutaku, said his office has not received any reports of flooding or displacement.
“I am quite happy that we haven’t received any complaints yet. No one has been affected, and we thank God for that,” said Cllr Takutaku.
He said, evacuation remains the only available precautionary measure should water levels rise, particularly as the stream has not yet been desilted.
“Wamlala has not been desilted, and I am told this is due to the dysfunction of the TLB,” he said.
The councillor urged residents, especially those near the stream, to remain alert as the rainy season continues.
Looking ahead, Cllr Takutaku said the council plans to install prepaid water meters in the ward this year.
The process began late last year and is expected to be completed before the end of the second quarter, following resolutions made during the October budget consultations.
