The Zimbabwe Warriors finally remembered how to win when they recorded a slim 1-0 victory over the Islanders to begin the regional competition on a positive note. The win coming against the backdrop of a chaotic couple of months whose source can be traced back to the door step of the FIFA appointed Normalisation Committee would have come as a relief to the much maligned Warriors gaffer Jairos Tapera.
Following a goalless first half, Michael Tapera struck for Zimbabwe eight minutes into the second stanza with a beauty of a goal that showed the young man’s ability inside the box ,to have a huge say in this contest at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.Farai Banda sent in a cross which Tapera side-footed into the back of the net after ghosting from the blind side.The 1-0 victory over Comoros has left coach Jairos Tapera’s Warriors in a good position in Group B as they now need one more win to go through to the next stage.
Forward Tapera stole the limelight with the all-important goal that separated the two sides. It was an afternoon he was making his national team debut but he executed himself very well to make a difference.Thursday’s win was also a relief for Zimbabwe coach Jairos Tapera who was under pressure after losing the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Bafana Bafana.Victory over Comoros could be seen as a step towards winning the confidence of Warriors fans in him.Comoros left themselves with a tough task to win their upcoming matches against Kenya and Zambia which could prove to be difficult.The Indian Ocean Islanders have never won the Cosafa Cup before and they are attempting to pull a first.
Zimbabwe now prepare to face Zambia in their next Group B match on Sunday knowing that victory will send them to the next round.On the same day, Comoros will be up against Kenya hoping to pick their first set of maximum points.
