Four Welton pupils in four consecutive years have earned scholarships to St George’s College a growing achievement that is transforming lives through sport and discipline.

As the school prepares to host cricket and tennis fixtures against Centenary College on February 28, the strongest story is not only about competition. It is about opportunity. It is about young athletes whose performances on the field have opened doors to one of Zimbabwe’s leading schools.

Welton is not just a feeder institution.

The school recruits pupils from Beitbridge and surrounding areas, bringing in promising young talent and nurturing them both academically and in sport.

Through structured training and exposure at competitive tournaments, learners are developed into well-rounded student-athletes capable of competing at the highest level.

Welton Sports Director Salvado Malunga said the journey gathered momentum in 2022 with Ethan Zhou , product of Welton primary .He was scouted while playing rugby in South Africa at a ZIMU14 tournament during his Form Two year at Prince Edward School.

A gifted all round sportsman who also played cricket, soccer and excelled in athletics Zhou is now in Lower Six at St George’s and incoming Head Boy.

In 2023, Nyasha Madari earned his place after being identified at a rugby tournament hosted by Midlands Christian College. Now in Form Three, he continues to balance rugby with cricket and soccer.

Tafara Mashazhu followed in 2024, also scouted at Midlands Christian College. He is currently in Form Two at St George’s.

Patrick Moyo became the fourth scholarship recipient in 2025 after being identified at another rugby tournament at the same venue.

“Four scholarships in four years signal more than success. They point to a deliberate system of identifying, nurturing and elevating talent,”said Malunga.

Malunga said sport continues to shape character and discipline among learners.

“I have seen sport shaping the lives of young people,” he said .

“Parents now understand that sport produces disciplined and wholesome children.”

“With the fixtures approaching, attention will again turn to emerging talent. At Welton, the biggest victory is not only on the scoreboard. It is in the doors that open for young boys whose potential is recognised, refined and rewarded.”he said.
