AT least 18 people have died following a tragic kombi explosion along the Bulawayo–Beitbridge on Thursday.

The incident is said to have occurred between Chipangali and the Gwanda tollgate, within the Umzingwane area, between approximately 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM.

According to the ZRP post on X ,the kombi burst into flames after the explosion, leading to significant loss of life.

A source at the scene, speaking through a relative at Beitbridge, said the scene was “horrific and death smelling everywhere”.

Authorities have not yet released full details regarding the cause of the explosion or the identities of the victims.

Emergency services are believed to be attending the scene, and further updates are expected as investigations continue.

Latest police report said the army and police has joined the fire brigade in combing the bush in search for bodies that may have been flung far.

While no official statement have been made some people suggest the mini bus may have been carrying explosive or highly inflammable materials.
