The National Prosecting Authority of Zimbabwe has called upon members of the public to find peaceful ways of resolving dispute and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
The call by the NPA as cases of people committing crimes as try to solve disputes.
The latest case involves 19 year old Layton Gatawa from Mberengwa, who was brought before the Mberengwa Magistrates’ Court facing charges of attempted murder.
It is the State’s case that on the 26th of June 2024, at around 0300 hours, the complainant, a security guard at Jabula Inn night club in Mberengwa, instructed patrons to vacate the premises as the club was closing. The accused person, a patron, refused to leave. An altercation ensued between the accused person and the complainant, resulting in the accused person stabbing the complainant in the chest with an okapi knife before fleeing the scene. The complainant subsequently reported the incident to the police and was referred to Mberengwa District Hospital for medical attention.
The accused person was sentenced to 30 months imprisonment of which 6 months were suspended. He will serve 24 months effective.
