Beitbridge – Aleck Mapita, a 37-year-old resident of Dulibadzimu, has been sentenced by the Beitbridge Magistrate Court following a violent robbery that left a victim injured. Mapita was found guilty of robbing a complainant of ZAR7000, two Samsung cellphones, and a small brown bag.
According to reports from the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), the robbery took place while the complainant was parked in a bushy area along the Beitbridge-Bulawayo road with a female friend.
In a brazen attack, Mapita and an accomplice, who remains at large, approached the vehicle.
Witnesses reported that Mapita smashed a window with a stone and threatened the complainant with a knife, demanding compliance.
Further escalating the situation, he grabbed the complainant by the neck while his accomplice struck the victim on the forehead with a small axe.
Quick-thinking quarry site workers nearby intervened, helping to apprehend Mapita soon after the robbery.
Police were alerted, and the stolen items, including the two cellphones and the brown bag, were recovered.
In court, Mapita was ordered to pay a fine of USD150 or face three months in prison.
Additionally, he received a six-month prison sentence, of which three months have been suspended
