Beitbridge- Zimbabwe from all walks of life, including different religious and political persuasion took time to pose, come together to commemorate the 2024 Heroes Day, a significant day on the country’s calendar of  events.

The District of Beitbridge was not to be left out in remembering this important occasion as the people converged at Makakavhule District Heroes acre in remembrance of the gallant sons and daughters of Zimbabwe who put their lives on the line for their motherland.

It was a day of sombre memories for widows and widowers of heroes and heroines as the reminisced on their dearly departed and the sacrifice they made for their country to be where it is today. A couple of them who spoke to the Ziyah News Network crew reminded Zimbabweans especially the young generation to take time and understand the history of their country, as a critical element that can ignite the unfiltered love for their country and be ready to defend its integrity at all cost.

The security forces were there to honour their departed comrades, music, a critical ingredient in the liberation struggle of Zimbabwe was also on the line and to cap it all food for all who made the trek to Makakavhule Heroes acre.

Guest of Honour and Beitbridge District Administrator Mrs Sikhangezile Mafu read the Presidential Speech to the gathering where His Excellency called upon Zimbabweans to draw strength from and emulate the sacrifices made by the departed gallant heroes.

“Even in the midst of neo-colonial machinations and illegal sanctions imposed on us, let us honour our heroes with a promise that their sacrifices will serve as our light and inspiration. We vow to resolutely protect the integrity of our Independence and the interests of our nation against those who wish us to fail.

“Our resilience is the bedrock of our survival as a nation. As such, and against all odds, our economy continues to register positive growth. This bears testimony to the success of our diversification thrust, as we forge ahead despite the illegal sanctions, climate-induced shocks as well as international commodity price fluctuations.”

In the address, His Excellency said the nation is honouring the departed cadres by forging ahead with economic development being witnessed in various sectors of the economy including the agriculture, mining, manufacturing , infrastructure development inclusive of investment in energy albeit under difficult circumstances as a result of sanctions.

It was an address full of hope and a clear path and plans towards making Zimbabwe realise its full economic potential.

As the guest of honour and service chiefs laid wreaths on the tomb of unknown soldiers, an atmosphere of remembrance and sombre engulfed the whole heroes acre as families of the departed and all gathered sucked in the realities of sacrifices made by our Heroes.
