THE title race continues to gather momentum in the Central Region Soccer League Division One, with history beckoning as log leaders Blanket Mine head into Wednesday’s Matchday 31 fixtures.
Blanket Mine are preparing to host local rivals ZRP Gwanda at Sabiwa Stadium in a derby that promises to be more than just a battle for three points, as both teams seek local bragging rights.
The log leaders will be looking to collect maximum points as they edge closer to securing the championship, with just five matches remaining in the season.
Blanket Mine have gone 30 league matches unbeaten and remain the only team yet to suffer a defeat this campaign.
Coach Petros Jukulile and his charges have built a reputation for thriving under pressure since the beginning of the season.
They will be eager to maintain their impressive run and finish the campaign in style as they close in on a historic league title.
Elsewhere, West Nicholson will host relegation-threatened Vhembe Stars Academy at Phelandaba Stadium.
West Nicholson cannot afford to drop points, with Grain Tigers breathing down their necks in the standings.
On the other hand, Vhembe Stars Academy are desperate for maximum points as they battle to escape relegation.
Speaking ahead of the encounter, West Nicholson coach Muleya said Vhembe would be motivated to produce their best football against his side, despite the hosts enjoying a relatively safe position on the log.
He also described the fixture as a provincial derby, warning that such encounters can be difficult because the players know one another well.
“This is literally a derby, and I have observed how my players prepare when they are about to face local teams. These players know each other, and sometimes there is an element of complacency. I will therefore urge my boys to guard against underestimating their opponents because Vhembe are not a bad side. They have good young players,” Muleya said.
In another fixture, fellow Beitbridge side Dulibadzimu United are preparing to host Grain Tigers in what promises to be a competitive encounter.
Dulibadzimu United will draw confidence from their recent victory in the Beitbridge derby as they look to build on that result.
On the other side of the coin, the match is unlikely to be straightforward, with Grain Tigers keen to maintain their respectable position in the standings, despite being out of contention for the title.
Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s fixture, Dulibadzimu United coach Rutherfold Matondo said his team were preparing to collect maximum points, while maintaining the same approach to every match.
“We are preparing to host Tigers on Wednesday. We treat every fixture the same and always aim higher in every game,” Matondo said.
In other fixtures, Shabanie Mine will host their young Zvishavane rivals, Sabi Mine, in a local derby at Maglass Stadium, while MSU FC welcome Gwanda Pirates at MSU Grounds.
As the season enters its decisive stages, Wednesday’s fixtures will play a crucial role in shaping both the title race and the battle for survival in the Central Region Soccer League Division One.
