A number of Bulawayo based and Zimbabwe’s oldest football club Highlanders FC travelling fans are reported to have died in an accident near Mbalabala along the Bulawayo-Gwanda Highway on Sunday night.
Different figures of the dead have been posted with the numbers feared to be close to 10.
The accident involved a Nissan Caravan minibus believed to have been carrying supporters from Filabusi.
The accident reportedly occurred as supporters were returning to their bases after their team’s match at home to Herentals in a league match.
Social media reports last night posted several pictures of a pile-up on the highway with a stationary truck believed central to the mishap.
Details surrounding the crash were still sketchy, with the number of people involved and confirmed casualties yet to be established.
Sources said the vehicle carrying the fans was involved in the accident near Mbalabala, raising fears that some of the supporters may have lost their lives.
The incident comes barely a month after Highlanders lost four members of its family in a tragic road accident along the Harare-Bulawayo Highway.
The accident comes just after Highlanders chairman Retired Colonel Kenneth Mhlophe, vice-chairman Sifiso Siziba, finance executive Nkani Khoza and supporter Mbalenhle Sibanda died in the July accident.
