A Beitbridge man from Tongwe has been sentenced to five months in prison after being convicted of malicious damage to property and unlawful hunting. He was arraigned and convicted by the Beitbridge Magistrates’ Court.

The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) reports that Elvis Ncube, along with an accomplice, Teenage Mulauzi—who remains at large—cut three strands of the electric fence securing Bishopstone Estate using a cutter to gain access for poaching purposes.

Game scouts on patrol intercepted the duo and arrested Ncube, while Mulauzi managed to escape.

The game scouts recovered the carcasses of one male wildebeest and two female elands, which the accused and his accomplice had hunted using two dogs and a spear. The spear and a torch used in the commission of the crime were also recovered.

The total value of the damage inflicted is USD 9,300, and none of the stolen property has been recovered.

Ncube has been ordered to pay restitution of ZWG 7,464 by October 20, 2024.
