A truck driver, his two passengers and a pedestrian died in a collision between the truck and a bus at the 220 kilometre peg along the Harare to Masvingo road on Thursday, tye Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has said.

ZRP said the bus carrying 60 passengers swerved and encroached in the other lane in an attempt to avoid the pedestrian but crashed head on with an Atego truck with two passengers.

The bus veered of the road as a result of the impact while the pedestrian was subsequently hit by the truck.

“The ZRP reports a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 13/05/26 at approximately 0130 hours at the 220 km peg along the Harare–Masvingo Road. The driver of an Asian Star bus travelling from Masvingo to Harare with 60 passengers on board attempted to avoid hitting a pedestrian, encroached onto the oncoming lane and was involved in a head-on collision with a Mercedes-Benz Atego truck carrying two passengers,” said ZRP in a report posted on its X account.

“As a result of the impact, the bus veered off the road, overturned and landed on its side, while the truck subsequently struck the pedestrian. Four people died on the spot, the truck driver, two passengers in the truck and the pedestrian, while four passengers from the bus sustained injuries,” said ZRP.

The bodies of the victims were taken to Mvuma Hospital Mortuary for post-mortem.
