After a year of teetering uncertainty, ZIFA has finally appointed a substantive coach, the Germany, Michael Nees, to lead the Zimbabwe Warriors. While it took some prodding from FIFA, ZIFA must also be applauded for making the right decision. However, the negative reactions from some fans, questioning Nees’ credentials, are unwarranted and unhelpful to the cause.

As fans, we should be rallying behind our new coach, giving him the support he needs to settle in and succeed. Instead, some are already dismissing him before he’s even had a chance to prove himself. This kind of animosity can only create a toxic atmosphere, hindering the team’s progress. We have some of the most exciting talent at our disposal in a very long time, and they need a key stakeholder in the fans to create that atmosphere where they feel wanted by their supporters.

Nees boasts an impressive UEFA Pro License, demonstrating his technical expertise. He’s promised to establish a distinct footballing style, something we’ve sorely lacked. Let’s not forget that some of our most memorable footballing style in recent memory came under the guidance of an unheralded coach in Klaus Dieter Pagels, who transformed our team with his enterprising approach, boys became internationals playing enterprising football.

We have an exciting pool of talent, and it’s our duty as fans to create an atmosphere that allows them to thrive. Let’s give Nees the chance to make his mark, to bring a fresh perspective, and to lead our Warriors to success. We owe it to ourselves, the team, and the nation to be supportive and optimistic.

The negative vibe is detrimental to what we all desire, the success of the team. Let’s put aside our doubts and embrace this new chapter in Zimbabwean football. Michael Nees deserves our trust and backing.
