UPCOMING Beitbridge filmmaker, Priviledge Siyaduma Zowa has released her debut drama, Gutsikana, a Ziyah Media production exploring the impact of poverty and hardship on marriage.

The title, Gutsikana, which means “be satisfied” in Shona, carries a powerful message throughout the drama.

The story follows Baba Chido and Mai Chido, a married couple battling poverty and unemployment, circumstances that place immense pressure on their relationship.

As their struggles deepen, tensions rise within the household.

Mai Chido becomes increasingly frustrated by her husband’s inability to secure employment, leading to constant conflict and emotional strain.

The drama portrays how financial hardships can test love, patience and understanding in a marriage.

Through the experiences of the couple, Gutsikana explores the importance of appreciation, respect and communication between partners, especially during difficult times.

The production encourages viewers to reflect on how families can navigate hardships without allowing challenges to destroy their relationships.

In her comment, Siyaduma said the inspiration behind the drama came from real-life situations she has observed in various communities.

“As an observer, I have seen how women and men fail to maintain their marriages, particularly through how they treat each other and deal with situations, especially during hardships,” she said.

“So through Gutsikana, I saw an opportunity to tell a story that most married people can relate to and also reflect on different ways of handling situations when facing hardships as presented in the drama.”

The production cinematography was handled by Prince Chese and Brian Mutare.

Sound production captured by John Booth.

The cast includes Tinashe Dzangare as Baba Chido, Tabeth Macheka as Mai Chido, Moreen Muzira as Sister, Anna Mugomba as Mai Washy and Rumbidzai Nyamand as Mother.

With its relatable storyline and strong social message, Gutsikana aims to spark conversations about marriage, perseverance and understanding during life’s toughest moments.

The drama is available for viewing on the Ziyah Media Facebook platform.
