Contrary to the popularised myth that Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a United Nations thing, the Government of Zimbabwe is at the fore front of championing SDGs in the country and all other entities are feeding into a Government led initiative, the Deputy Director of the SDGs and Agenda 2063 Unit in the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare  has said.

Deputy Director Sylocious Chaturuka was speaking at a media engagement and training on SDGs, Agenda 2063 and  Vision 2030 and NDS1 underway in Masvingo.

“We need to demystify the notion that SDGs are a United Nations thing, it is a Government effort, plan and agenda agreed at global level. All efforts which are done are complementary to what the Government is doing, they (SGGs) are aligned to Governmental agenda, it is Government that is the mastermind and chief Implement,” she said.

The Deputy Director highlighted the importance of the media  of the media engagement and training workshop emphasising the indispensability of media professionals to the achievement of SDGs and all national development goals.

“Awareness is the first step to action and it is the media which is at the forefront of this awareness. This workshop will equip you the journalists with tools, skills and resources to communicate effectively, report on SDGs and advocate for sustainable development,” she added.

About 30 journalists drawn from across the country and from diverse media houses from community, provincial and national levels  including Ziyah Media, are participating at the workshop.
