Debutants Kenya secured a 2-1 victory over Mexico at the U17 FIFA Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic, marking their first-ever goals, points, and victory in a World Cup, whether in the men’s or women’s category.
After losing their first two matches 2-0 against England and 3-0 against Korea DPR the Kenyan team displayed a commendable performance, making history with their win over the Mexican U17 team.
In the 15th minute, Valerie Nekesa scored Kenya’s inaugural World Cup goal, followed by Lornah Faith, who netted the second goal in the 36th minute, securing the victory. Mexico’s Alexa Soto scored a consolation goal from the penalty spot in the 90+2 minute.
Although Kenya did not qualify for the quarterfinals, as they joined their counterparts Zambia, who also failed to secure a win in all three group-stage matches, the Kenyan team made a significant impact on their World Cup journey.
Their historic victory will remain a memorable highlight for the Football Federation of Kenya.
