Harare – As the Government responds to public outcry over the state of the health sector, Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, Zimbabwe’s largest public referral hospital, is receiving long-overdue upgrades thanks to a partnership between the government and local private players.
Construction company Prevail International is leading the first phase of the redevelopment, focusing on two key buildings, Adlam House, which houses student nurses, and the adjacent Mbuya Nehanda Maternity Hospital.
The Adlam House refurbishment is nearing completion, with handover scheduled for September 1. Project manager Vanessa Butao confirmed that major works are already done.
“We’ve installed aluminium windows, completed the painting, and replaced the entire roof. For Mbuya Nehanda, we’ve begun demolition and reached 15% on plumbing and window installations,” she said.
The Mbuya Nehanda upgrade is more extensive, involving the demolition of old sections to make way for a modern, fully equipped maternity facility. The redesign includes a new reception area, upgraded plumbing, better ventilation, and an eco-conscious layout.
“We’re delivering a world-class standard,” added Tariro Dondo, Prevail’s public relations manager. “All plumbing, electricals, flooring, and ceilings completed so far are high quality. We’re building something sustainable and modern.”
Once completed, the project will improve living conditions for trainee nurses and enhance maternal healthcare services for thousands of patients.
The facelift is part of a broader national effort to revitalise key public institutions through public-private partnerships, seen as critical to restoring confidence in Zimbabwe’s healthcare system.
