Former Chevrons top order batter Stuart Matsikenyeri, is set to take charge of the teams tour of Bangladesh as the Zimbabwe Cricket board continues its search for a permanent coach to take over from Dave Houghton.

The team has been working with interim coaches since the departure Houghton after the disastrous T20 World Cup qualifier tournament in Namibia.

Matsikinyeri who played all formats of the game for Zimbabwe, takes over from Walter Chawaguta who was thrust into the position on an interim basis post Houghton’s resignation before his appointment to head the Lady Chevrons taking over from Garry Brent.

It is expected that the Bangladesh tour will be the last where the team will have an interim coach as Zimbabwe Cricket look forward to announce a substantive coach for the Chevrons next month.

Zimbabwe Cricket flighted an advert for the position of the senior men’s national team coach together with that of the Under-19s, which fell vacant when Prosper Utseya stepped down at the conclusion of the ICC Under-19 World Cup in January.

The coach who will take over on a substantive basis is coming into a team that is clamouring for a reset with the majority of the veterans all into their late 30s. However, the coach will have a decent platform to start from given the exploits of the largely developmental side that won the Africa Games gold medal in Ghana.
