Zimbabwe’s Mighty Warriors are seeking to overturn the deficit and achieve redemption when they host Malawi’s Scorchers at the National Sports Stadium on Tuesday in the second leg of their first-round qualifier for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Zimbabwe-Malawi’s clash presents a crucial test of character for the Mighty Warriors, who must demonstrate their resilience, determination and hunger to keep their Olympic qualification hopes alive.
Following their 2-0 defeat at Bingu National Stadium in the first leg, where the Chawinga sisters, Tabitha and Temwa, proved clinical in front of goal, the Mighty Warriors will be eager to restore their pride on home soil.
The Chawinga sisters are undoubtedly among the biggest stars in women’s football and will once again pose a significant threat to Zimbabwe’s defence as Malawi look to strengthen their advantage.
The in-form Scorchers finished as runners-up at the previous Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, secured their maiden qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup and are now looking to keep their dream of competing at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games alive.
The pressing question on the minds of football fans across the country is whether head coach Stella Gotal and her charges can pull off an upset against the in-form Scorchers.
The challenge now becomes significantly tougher for Zimbabwe but playing at home could provide the Mighty Warriors with the opportunity to turn the tie around.
Mighty Warriors will need to be more clinical in front of goal while finding a way to contain Malawi’s attacking threats.
Fans on social media have called on coach Gotal to consider introducing new faces into the squad, particularly players plying their trade outside Zimbabwe, as the team looks to strengthen its competitiveness ahead of the decisive encounter.
One fan argued that the clash against Malawi would also require players with physical strength, fitness and the ability to compete at a high level.
“Malawi is not for the faint-hearted. They can even compete against the Warriors or the in-form Young Warriors and hold their own,” the fan said.
With their Olympic qualification hopes hanging in the balance, the Mighty Warriors will be under pressure to deliver a victory rather than settle for a draw or suffer another defeat.
