PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has called for increased investment in rural communities as Government pushes its rural industrialisation agenda.
Mnangagwa said rural communities must benefit from development because they played a key role during the liberation struggle.
He was speaking in a Heroes Day message read on his behalf by Beitbridge District Administration office Jahson Mugodzva at Makakavhule Heroes Acre on Monday.
He said Government was directing investment into rural infrastructure, manufacturing hubs and agro-processing through its “Invest Rural” policy.
He urged businesses and Zimbabweans in the diaspora to invest in rural districts.
“I invite the private sector and Zimbabweans in the diaspora to tap into the numerous investment opportunities and lower cost drivers in districts and wards,” he said.
Mnangagwa said Government would accelerate the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges connecting communities to schools, clinics and markets.
For Beitbridge, the push could open up opportunities for agro-processing and other industries that add value to locally produced goods.
He also challenged local authorities and traditional leaders to play a leading role in rural development.
He further praised Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and cooperatives for driving production in the manufacturing and mining sectors.
Mnangagwa said the Government would continue supporting these businesses as Zimbabwe seeks to expand economic activity beyond major urban centres.
