THE voting window for the National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA) has officially closed, setting the stage for what promises to be a glittering celebration of Zimbabwean creativity tonight, February 28, in Harare.

As the country’s premier arts awards, NAMA stands as a beacon of recognition for excellence across Zimbabwe’s vibrant creative industries.

From music and film to literature, fashion, and digital content creation, the awards spotlight the artists and cultural practitioners shaping the nation’s identity.

With public voting now concluded, nominees and fans alike are holding their breath ahead of the highly anticipated ceremony.

The People’s Choice Award has generated particular buzz, as Michelle Moyo popularly known as Ritz Mcleish stands as the only woman in a competitive five-horse race dominated by entertainment heavyweights Jah Prayzah, Winky D, Prince Chigwida, and comedy veteran Comic Elder.

Her nomination has sparked debate among fans, with some questioning whether she belongs in the same category as established musicians and comedians.

Tonight’s results, however, are expected to settle the discussion once and for all.

Since its inception, NAMA has played a pivotal role in honoring outstanding achievements in the arts.

The awards celebrate the richness and diversity of Zimbabwe’s cultural landscape, serving both as a benchmark for excellence and an inspiration for innovation.

This year’s awards span a broad spectrum of categories, reflecting the depth of local talent:

  • Film & Television
  • Fashion
  • Dance
  • Spoken Word

  • Special Awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award and Outstanding Artist in the Diaspora

The NAMA selection process blends public participation with expert evaluation.

After nominations are submitted, a panel of respected judges drawn from various artistic fields assesses entries based on creativity, originality, impact, and technical excellence.

With the voting window now closed, the final baton is handed to the adjudication process, culminating in tonight’s awards ceremony.

The awards night is expected to feature dazzling red-carpet moments, live performances, emotional acceptance speeches, and special tributes.

Beyond the trophies, the ceremony offers a rare moment for Zimbabwe’s arts community to unite in celebration of shared passion and perseverance.

As the lights dim and envelopes are opened, one question hangs in the air: who will walk away with the coveted accolades? By the end of tonight, Zimbabwe’s creative champions for the year will be crowned and a new chapter in the country’s artistic story will be written.
