King Misuzulu kaZwelithini has announced the cancellation of his traditional wedding to fiancée Nomzamo Myeni, citing “reasons beyond the control of the Royal House.”
The announcement has ignited speculation and controversy, particularly surrounding the influence of the king’s first wife, who is allegedly implicated in the decision.
The king issued a formal statement directed to Dr. Nonhlanhla Mkhize, the Director-General of the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government, outlining the immediate withdrawal of all benefits and security provisions previously assigned to Myeni.
He stated that all arrangements for the traditional wedding have been terminated as well.
“I write to formally instruct the immediate withdrawal of all benefits and security details previously assigned to Ms. Nomzamo Myeni. Due to reasons beyond the control of the Royal House, the traditional wedding ceremonies involving Ms. Myeni have been called off.
As a result, it has become necessary to terminate all associated arrangements. The following actions must be implemented without delay:
The withdrawal of all benefits, allowances, or privileges granted to Ms. Miven must be ceased effective immediately.
The security detail assigned to Ms. Myeni is to be withdrawn by no later than 11:00 AM on 19 January 2024.
I trust that your office will facilitate the implementation of these directives promptly and ensure that all necessary measures are taken to finalize this matter.
Please confirm in writing once these actions have been completed. Should you have any questions or require further clarity, you may contact the Royal Office directly. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.”
The letter requested that Mkhize’s office facilitate these actions promptly and confirm their implementation in writing.
The abrupt decision has fueled speculation on social media, with many users citing the king’s first wife as a key player in the unfolding drama. Rumors suggest that she has been a formidable opponent to the idea of a third queen, influencing the king’s decision to cancel the wedding.
This has led to a surge of debates among the Zulu community and beyond, regarding traditional customs and the dynamics within the royal family.
The King’s office has yet to provide further clarity on the specific “reasons” behind the cancellation or whether the tensions between the wives influenced the decision.
