BINDURA – A 39-year-old security guard has been jailed for posing as a police officer in an attempt to extort money from a resident in Chipadze, Bindura.

The Bindura Magistrates’ Court convicted Mohamad Chiroroma after he pleaded guilty to impersonating a law enforcement officer. He was sentenced to 24 months in prison, with 10 months suspended on condition of good behavior, leaving him to serve an effective 14 months.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), Chiroroma hatched the scheme on August 15, 2025, when he armed himself with a police constabulary identification card belonging to an actual police officer. He approached a woman at her home, pretending to be investigating drug-related crimes.

However, the victim became suspicious after noticing that Chiroroma’s face did not match the one on the ID card. She quickly alerted the police, leading to his arrest. Detectives recovered the fake identification card from his wallet during the arrest.

In a statement, the NPAZ urged members of the public to remain vigilant and verify the credentials of anyone claiming to be a police officer.

“Impersonating law enforcement undermines public trust and will be met with stern punishment,” the authority warned.
