Zimbabwe’s Consulate in Capetown has issued a warning to Zimbabweans in the Western Cape Province of scammers on the prowl purporting to be agents working with the Civil Registry Department in Zimbabwe.

The alert comes as many Zimbabweans have been scammed and issued with counterfeit documents which eventually gives them trouble with authorities.

“These are claiming to produce or facilitate the production of birth and marriage certificates and Identity Cards to desperate Zimbabweans,” said the Consulate in a statement.

The Consulate further warned members of the public that cooperating with these criminals amounts to a criminal offence.

“Cooperating with bogus agents to obtain fake national documents is a serious criminal offense. All Zimbabwean nationals are urged to obtain documents through legal means/formal processes. Please note that IDs are obtained in person ONLY at the Civil Registry Department in Zimbabwe.”

They also urged Zimbabweans to verify information first before engaging in any services or transactions. Clients were also encouraged to visit the Consulate website www.zimconsulatecpt.co.za for information and updates.
