Residents and stakeholders around Beitbridge town came together to participate in the National Clean-up Day, a nationwide initiative aimed at promoting cleanliness and reduction of waste with a call for the adoption of the 3Rs to deal with the waste menace.
The clean up event targeted areas from Mashakada roundabout and ending at Beitbridge Stadium, near rank, with various stakeholders including civil servants, MDIs and the private sector taking part.
Stakeholders in Beitbridge join forces to reduce waste in the town achieved by picking up litter.
As the people of the border town came together for the worthy cause, the community has been urged to adopt the 3Rs that is Reduce, Re-use and Recycle to effectively deal with waste in Beitbridge town.
Reduce, Re-use, and Recycle by Descent Ndlovu the Provincial and environment manager of EMA for Matebeleland South.
“As a community let us take up this call and join hands in implementing the principles of zero waste. Let us take heed of the 3Rs of waste management. Let us Reduce the amount of waste we are generating at household level up to our commercial ventures,” said Descent Ndlovu, the Provincial Environment Manager for the Environmental Management Agency.
He further explained the major goal of cleaning up campaign saying “the major thrust of this day is the international Day of Zero waste which is commemorated every 30th of march globally every year which spells that zero tolerance of waste.”Said Descent Ndlovu
The clean up campaign also highlighted the importance of prioritizing the waste recycling industry, which has the potential to transform local and national economies.
“Let us invest in the recycling industry which after all is worth billions of dollars globally. Let us tap into this industry which will transform our local and national economies and thus emancipate us from the shackles of poverty and dirtiness.”
The clean-up campaign day was established by President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa in December 2018, designating the first Friday of each month as National Clean-up Day.
