Harare – Alpha Media Holdings (AMH) publishers of the weekly Zimbabwe Independent newspaper has reportedly been charged with undermining the authority of or insulting the President through a recent Muckraker column published by the weekly.

This comes after Faith Zaba, editor of the Zimbabwe Independent, was on 4 July 2025 granted bail by Harare magistrate Vakayi Chikwekwe after spending three nights in custody on charges of allegedly undermining the authority of or insulting the President, charges stemming from the same article.

Detectives from Harare Central Police Station’s Law and Order Section, reportedly recorded a statement from Kholwani Nyathi, editor-in-chief of AMH who was in the company of Lawyer Chris Mike.

According to Mhike, “The company denies all allegations levelled against it by the State and details of the denial shall be traversed at the forthcoming court session.”

The placing of AMH to its defence is the second time in as many months as the company was also co-charged in the  Blessed Mhlanga case. While authorities maintain the stable is going beyond the tenets of journalism in its offerings, press freedom proponents believe AMH journalists are targets of a systematic onslaught on press freedom and independence.
