The Zimbabwean football fraternity has been plunged into mourning following the passing of apioneer of the local game, former Southern Rhodesia and Mashonaland United player Nevison Masunda.
He was centenarian dying at 101.
The Zimbabwe Football Association announced this passing on in Bulawayo recognising as a true pioneer of the local game.
“The Zimbabwe football Association joins the wider football community in mourning the passing of Nevison Masunda , who died in Bulawayo at the age of 101. A true pioneer of the local game, Masunda played for Mashonaland United and Southern Rhodesia during an era that laid foundation for the Zimbabwean football,” wrote the Association in a tribute to Masunda.
” He joined the legendary Chikwata in 1944 and lined up alongside notable figures such as the late former Vice President Joseph Msika representing both club and the Red Army, a select team that carried the hopes of Bulawayo in the prestigious Osborne Cup.”
ZIFA also described Masunda’s longevity and legacy as a source of inspiration to generations past and present.
“Mr Masunda ‘s contribution to football and to the history of our nation will be remembered with deep respect. His longevity and legacy are a source of inspiration to generations past and present”.
