A lone gunman, believed familiar with surroundings at Peter’s Motel, allegedly robbed fuel attendants of over $2 000 before driving off in an expensive South African registed Jaguar car belonging to a former owner of the place.
Attendants at the service station said the man arrived at about 3am on Sunday and knocked at a door only people with knowledge about the place would use.
“We never suspected anything and opened and he entered pointing a gun and demanded cash. He pointed the gun at me,” said a male fuel attendant who was in the company of a lady workmate.
“The man spoke in Shona and he had a mask,” he said.
The man went away but is now suspected to have stolen the car discovered missing in the morning from the premises owned by a Mutasa who used to own Peter’s Motel.
Investigayions by Ziyah News Network established the man may have been a builder who used to work at the hotel.
He is suspected to have, some time back, stolen a bag belonging to Mrs Mutasa where the keys of the vehicle were kept and after hitting the fuel he made easy his escape and drove off in the super car.
He left a trail along the Harare road wheee he is said to have driven past the Bubi security roadblock, 80 kilometres up Harare Road from Beitbridge.
“His voice was familiar. He was asking my workmate out for some time but noone even bothered asking for his name. We believe its him because he is familiar with this place,” said the attendant.
He would be the second car thief to drive past a security checkpoint after another one last month who drove a stolen Toyota Supercab through Makhado Security roadblock.
From the modus operandi, it would appear he is the same gunman who has been cause of sleepless nights in Beitbridge where he is accuxdd of kidnapping a young girl believed to have been found on Sunday.
On Sunday morning several other robberies were reported across the border town where the suspects randomly hit their targets including a Beitbridge Hospital official Treasure Dube and a mobile money transfer agent.
More than 10 other reports have been made inside two days and rhis has baffled the Beitbridgs community.
Superintendent Nyakurerwa of Beitbridge Police referred media questions to the national police spokesman Cpmmissioner Paul Nyathi who mobile phone could not be reached.
