A Beitbridge Hotel employee, Tawonga Makumbe, has pleaded guilty to stealing R23,205 from his employer over a four-month period.

Makumbe, who worked as a food delivery worker, appeared before Beitbridge magistrate Mponisi Kaweni to answer to charges of theft.

The court heard that between January and April 2025, Makumbe took hotel funds meant to be handed over to management he did not.

Prosecutor Reason Mutamba said the offence was discovered by hotel supervisor Pricilla Makonese during a routine check, after whroutpolice were informed.

When asked by the court about his responsibilities, Makumbe said he was supposed to remit the money to the company.

“I was supposed thehand over money to the company,” he said.

He admitted to using the money for personal reasons.

“I used the money to repay people I borrowed from to pay school fees for my three children,” he said.

Kaweni postponed the matter to October 25, 2025, for continuation of the case.
