Beitbridge – A team of security personnel responsible for anti-smuggling efforts in Beitbridge has apprehended three men posing as members of the anti-smuggling unit. The trio mounted illegal roadblocks and terrorised unsuspecting motorists. A fourth member of the gang, identified as Bako, is currently on the run.

The arrested individuals are Renius Kusakwa, 30, Romeo Moyo, and Willard Mutsaumi. They were apprehended at the 15km peg along the Beitbridge-Masvingo highway.

The gang was using a white Toyota Probox with registration number AGH 5014.They were intercepted around the Lutumba area, where they had set up an illegal roadblock.

They sped off, and a 10-minute chase ensued, ending with the Probox overturning at the 5km peg from the Beitbridge Bridge. Security personnel searched the vehicle and found a police reflector, handcuff keys, four mobile phones, two passports belonging to Moyo and Mutsaumi, and a driver’s license for Moyo.

The arrested trio has since been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Beitbridge for further case management. Law enforcement agents have been conducting an anti-smuggling campaign on the highway, and these criminal elements manipulated the operation to extort money from members of the public.
