A Beitbridge-based money changer will curse his ancestors for failing to attend court after a default judgement to pay $250 per month in child maintenance was made against him.
After the court orderly called his name three times, left, right and centre, Never Semwayo, was no where to be seen.
He had not excused himself and Magistrate Mbonisi Kaweni went ahead in the applicant` Priscilla Mutatiri’ favour.
In her application, Mutatiri demanded US$250 per month for the maintenance of the minor child.
Mutatiri told the court that she survives by carrying luggage for travelers, a job popularly known as “Zalawi,” and earns about R900 per month.
She said, Semwayo works as a money changer and allegedly earns around US$1 000 every month.
Semwayo did not attend the court proceedings despite being served with court papers, resulting in the matter proceeding in default.
Kaweni granted the application and ordered Semwayo to pay US$250 monthly on or before the end of each month with effect from May 2026.
The order will remain valid until the child reaches the age of 18 or becomes self-supporting.
