A woman who allegedly smuggled US$12 000 worth of drugs and substances concealed in MAQ washing powder boxes was arrested at the Beitbridge Border Post.

On a post on their X handle the Zimbabwe Republic Police identified he suspect as Venancio Muchazondida.

Police said 48 boxes containing the drugs and substances were recovered during the operation carried out at the border post.

According to police, the contraband had been concealed inside cardboard boxes labelled as MAQ washing powder and wrapped in black plastic in an attempt to evade detection by border security officials.

“The police also confiscated a Nissan Elgrant vehicle, registration number ADG 3066 used as a conduit to smuggle the drugs,” said ZRP.

“No to drug and substance peddling and trafficking,”

When Ziyah News Network sought further information on the case on Saturday the Officer Commanding Beitbridge Police District Chief Superintendent Mesuli Ncub was unvailable.

A senior officer referred Ziyah News Network to the national police spokesman Senior Commissioner Paul Nyathi in Harare.

“Information related to that arrest was relayed to the National office kindly get hold of our Police Spokesperson Commissioner P. Nyathi ,” said rhe officer.

Nyathi was unavailable for comment at the time of going to press.

The arrest comes amid growing concern over rising cases of drug and substance abuse in Zimbabwe, with security agencies increasing surveillance at border entry points.
