The Chicago bus accident is a stark reminder on how our roads have become so dangerous, the proverbial Grim Reaper. The accident took away 9 lives and injured dozens. Road traffic accidents have continued to be a menace, and what is worrying the most is human error is at the heart of these. It’s very unfortunate that a donkey led to the deaths of bread winners , a situation that could have been avoided had servitude wires erected along the roads to prevent animals encroaching into the roads not been stolen.
The people who steal these, are members of society, they live within our community and sell and or use these wires amongst us and together we have the power to put an end to such vandal behaviour.
We also have a moral duty to return to our culture of penning animals at night as it’s very disturbing that the donkey was wandering around during the night when it was supposed to be in it’s pen. We need a serious community dialogue, community engagement platforms to ask the critical questions amongst ourselves.
As citizens we have a role to police each other and report any suspicious activities or unauthorized tampering with such key infrastructure. Furthermore, public awareness campaigns and educational programs can educate individuals about the consequences of such actions, fostering a sense of responsibility and ownership for the safety of our roads.
Law enforcement agencies must take a proactive stance in investigating and apprehending those involved in the theft of servitude wires. Increased patrols, surveillance systems, and partnerships with local communities can deter criminals and provide a safer environment for motorists. Additionally, strict penalties and robust legal frameworks should be in place to deter potential offenders and ensure the swift prosecution of those caught engaging in such activities.
