Opposition politician and lawyer Fadzayi Mahere has formally lodged a complaint with the Law Society of Zimbabwe (LSZ) against fellow legal practitioner Joshua Chirambwe, whom she accuses of sexual harassment.

Mahere alleges that Chirambwe posted inappropriate and lustful comments in a WhatsApp group they both belong to, prompting her to leave the group.

In her complaint directed to LSZ Executive Director Edward Mapara, Mahere detailed that one of Chirambwe’s messages made her feel uncomfortable enough to exit the group known as Zim Advocates.

She attached copies of these messages to her complaint, noting they were posted under the pseudonym “Young Money.”

“It is my humble view that such sexual harassment has no place in the legal profession. I therefore lodge this complaint in terms of clause 3(23) of SI 37 of 2018 and request that disciplinary action be taken against this legal practitioner,” Mahere stated.

In response to Mahere’s complaint, Mapara has formally addressed Chirambwe, notifying him of the allegations and requesting a response within 14 days.

He highlighted that the accusations suggest a potential violation of several ethical standards, including courtesy and respect among professional colleagues as stipulated in the Legal Practitioners (Code of Conduct) By-Laws and the Law Society of Zimbabwe Sexual Harassment Policy.

“These allegations point to a possible contravention of By-Laws 3 (23) of the Legal Practitioners (Code of Conduct) By-Laws, 2018 SI 37 of 2018, and part 6.2.1 of the Law Society of Zimbabwe Sexual Harassment Policy, 2024,” Mapara wrote.

The case has drawn attention within the legal community, with many calling for swift action to ensure a respectful and safe working environment for all practitioners.

Meanwhile, social media has erupted with comments, with some users accusing Mahere of overreacting to the situation.

“People need to lighten up. Chirambwe’s comments weren’t harmful; they were just jokes!” one user asserted.

Conversely, others supported Mahere, advocating against sexual harassment of women.

“Kudos to Mahere for speaking out! It’s time we hold people accountable for their words,” another added.
